Arts Center Spiral’s goal is to create a sustainable, progressive and equitable mixed-use community space, contributing to the transformation of the city through the integration of biophilic This building, set in Midtown Atlanta, achieves these goals through the design and use of mass-timber, and by creating a structural system that is reflective of systems in nature. The glue-laminated timber waffle slabs on each floor are affected by the columns on the floor above. Wherever the column lands, the waffle structure below it deepens, allowing the structure to transfer the loads to the columns on that floor. This allows the building to twist, without having a continuous series of columns throughout each floor of the building.
